Leg Cramp Relief for Diabetics
Hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic individuals are both prone to leg cramps. They can occur at night, in the middle of the day for no reason at all, or during an important business meeting. These leg cramps can be concentrated in one area, such as above the knee or bottom calve. They can also occur in both legs simultaneously, or all over the leg in many areas. In severe cases a leg cramp will cause shooting pains that are debilitating. Leg cramp relief for diabetics is a bit more precise than other types of relief for other leg cramp causes.
Leg cramps during the night while sleeping peacefully can awaken you with agonizing pain. This means your sleep is disturbed, probably for more than a few minutes, and you don’t get the rest you need. This also means that you may be experiencing diabetic related leg cramps which are a sign of improper diet or vitamin deficiency. There are a few methods to fix this, and they only require a bit of a lifestyle change.
How to Relieve the Pain
If the pain doesn’t stop, take deep breaths and relax your body. If the muscles get the signal from your brain that your body is relaxing, it might relax as well.
Try to massage it gently to work blood flow back into the area.
If those two things do not work, get a muscle relaxer to loosen the muscles. There are various medications that can relax cramped muscles. If you do not have medication then have Valerian Root Tea on hand at all times. It does the same thing that a powerful relaxer will do.
Things to Do To Prevent Leg Cramp
You should eat a banana daily if you are a diabetic with leg cramps. If it spikes your blood glucose too much, just eat half of a banana or a small piece. There are many other fruits that are high in potassium as well, but are not as easily accessible or as cheap as a banana.
Exercise daily to keep your body in its best condition possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean running 5 miles, but a bit of cardio never hurt anyone.
Stretch and massage your muscles at night after a warm shower. This will reduce the likelihood that you will feel leg cramps during the night, but it isn’t fool proof.
